Lumpkin was not selected at the time of his 2001 NBA Draft, so he made his professional debut in Europe. He played only three seasons – the two first in Belgium with Leuven Bears and Liege Basket, the third in Belgium for Leuven Bears and Liege Basket Then the final season was with Aix Maurienne Savoie Basket in France. Lumpkin realized that professional basketball at the top level in Europe did not match what he was looking for from the game. In a 2007 interview Lumpkin said “[T]he basketball over there was a bit of a letdown after playing at the College of Charleston. It was very much like punching a time clock. With player turnover and coaching turnovers, it was a lot like a job. I had six coaches in three years.”
The Cougars have won two more regular season conference championships during Lumpkin’s final two seasons at the university, but since they were unable to make it to at the SoCon Tournament either time, they didn’t get bids to any tournaments in the postseason. Lumpkin increased his scoring percentages throughout each of the seasons. In 2000-01, he averaged 17.1 points as well as 7.9 rebound per game, as he led the Cougars to 22-7 overall record, Lumpkin was named the SoCon Player of the Year. He was a part of Sedric Webber as the sole two CofC players to be awarded the award within the Southern Conference. He scored over 1,300 point and racked up more than 700 rebounds in his four- year total in both Rice as well as CofC.
