Joan Nesbit is one of the most popular and richest Athletics Competitor who was born on January 20, 1962 in United States. Joan Nesbit Mabe (born January 20th 1962) is an American former long-distance athlete who competed at distances of 3000 meters and up to 10,000 meters. The most prestigious award she received was a bronze award in the 3000m race at the 1995 IAAF World Indoor Championships. She took part in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and was a participant four times in the IAAF World Cross Country Championships.

She also began participating in road races and she won her first race in the Falmouth Road Race in 1984. Other road races at this point included winning the Maggie Valley Moonlight in 1989 and 1992, as well as also the Buffalo 4-mile Chase as well as the Crazy 8’s Road Race in 1992.

She married her first husband, Bill Kerwin in the early 1990s and the pair had a daughter, Sarah Jane, around 1993. She had two further daughters, Rosie and Lizzie, and after divorce married her second husband, Dave.

Nesbit returned to action 1992 and was an improved runner. She was fifth in the 3000 m at the USA Indoor Championships and then placed fourth over that distance at the 1992 United States Olympic Trials. Although she missed the Olympic spot, this performance led to her first international selection and she finished fourth at the 1992 IAAF World Cup in Havana. She missed the 1993 season but returned to take her first national podium in the 3000 m at the 1994 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in third. She achieved that same placing at the USA Indoor Championships, which brought her another international call-up. She was among the leaders at the 1995 IAAF World Indoor Championships and claimed the 3000 m bronze medal one place behind compatriot Lynn Jennings. This was the first and ultimately Nesbit’s only medal for the United States.

She was a collegiate athlete with her team, the North Carolina Tar Heels. In her initial two years she did not get through the heats of the NCAA Outdoor and Indoor meets. In 1982, at the NCAA Women’s Division I Cross Country Championship she placed 37th, but moved up to 15th in the following year.

Born born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Nesbit was a student at East Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, North Carolina, graduating in 1980 , before pursuing American literature until the master’s degree at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Nesbit had begun running distance towards the close of high school, and an impressive showing at state competitions lead to an athletic scholarship at the college level.

It was through cross-country athletics that Nesbit first became a star on the national stage and she competed in the USA Cross Country Championships while at college. She placed 32nd in 1982 and 38th in 1983, however she quickly rose to 11th at the 1984 event. In 1985, at the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships she placed eighth in the two-mile race and was 14th in cross country later the same year. She was struggling with change from college to is considering quitting the sport. In the meantime, she started coaching a brand new trainer Harry Wilson, upon the guidance of her former college buddy Jim Cooper.

Her two best NCAA placings came in her final year of student competition in 1984, coming seventh in the 3000 meters at the NCAA Indoor Championships and fourth over 10,000 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. She left the University of North Carolina with three NCAA All-American honours.
