Huffman (born 1956) is the Republican Member of the Texas Senate who represents District 17 which covers the majority of Harris County. Huffman was a clear winner of a nomination for the State Senate during the Republican primary that took place on March 4 2014. She beat her sole main opponent Derek A. Anthony 32,962 (81.1 percent) to 7,691 (18.9 percent). She took the primary on the 4th of November, 2014. defeating Democratic Candidate Rita Lucido 113,817 (63.34%) to 60,934 (33.91 percent).
In March 2015, Huffman proposed greater protection against libel for journalists who report whistleblower claims which turn out to have been false but which the reporters believed accurate at the time of media release. Huffman’s plan died in her State Affairs Committee.
Huffman’s has been acknowledged by numerous advocacy groups. She was named a “Champion for Free Enterprise” by the Texas Association of Business, a “Taxpayer Champion” by Texans for Fiscal Responsibility and a “Big Voice for Little Texans” by Court Appointed Special Advocates for her work to protect children. She was also named a “Patient Care Champion” by the Harris County Medical Society, earned the TEXPAC “Patient Protection Award” from the Texas Medical Association, both for back-to-back legislative sessions, and is the only repeat recipient of the Texas District and County Attorneys Association’s “Law and Order Award” since its inception, for her efforts to improve victims’ protections and the criminal justice system. However, she was also cited as being the worst Texas Senator by Texas Monthly magazine. She was again included on the Texas Monthly list of worst Texas legislators in 2015, for, among other things, sponsoring an amendment to a bill that would “exclude from personal financial disclosure the holdings of legislators’ spouses.” He husband, Keith Lawyer, a Houston nightclub owner, had loaned Huffman $500,000 for the 2008 campaign.
A mere one-in-five people voted during the election for Texas Senate that took place on the 16th of December in 2008. Huffman beat the incumbent Democratic challenger, Chris Bell, a former member of the United States House of Representatives 24431 (56 percentage) against 19104 (44 percentage). Bell was the party’s failed Democratic governor’s candidate in 2006, losing in a general election with five candidates against Republican Gov. Rick Perry, 39-30 percent.

Bell was the leader in the first balloting on the 4th of November, when an initial round of special elections took place alongside the congressional and presidential elections. Bell won 38 per cent of the votes in comparison to Huffman’s 26 per cent. Bell and a third Democratic candidate, Stephanie Simmons, had the same percentage of 52 percent during the initial round. The runoff did however allow Huffman to unite those who backed three Republican candidate, Austen H. Furse (born 1960), Kenneth R. Sherman (born 1962) as well as Grant P.
