Jo Lemaire debuted musically in the late 1970s when she formed her group of musicians, “Jo Lemaire + Flouze”. The group experienced a breakthrough after the release of their debut album Pigmy World in 1981. This album, which contained the moody synthpop rendition of the song by Serge Gainsbourg “Je suis venue te dire que je m’en vais” and propelled Lemaire to fame across Europe as well as Canada. After 1982, the band was disbanded and Lemaire continued to perform as an independent artist. The couple got divorced from Philippe Depireux, a fellow former band member, and moved into Bilzen together with her newly-wed love, Fa Vanham.
Her debut Solo album, Concorde, was released to great acclaim in 1983. The record was unique because it was bilingual, having an album with one of the sides with lyrics in English as well as the second side in French. The following year an album titled self-titled was released, and produced by Jean- Marie Aerts. The album also received a lot of the success of her previous albums. The third album she released called Stand Up was recorded with PolyGram International rather than Phonogram Belgium.
