He later turned into an experienced tournament professional with the ability to win or place in numerous tournaments. He was ranked 5th worldwide according to the Pro Billiards Tour (PBT) in the year 1996.

His early life was characterized by instability. Wetch’s parents divorced when he was 9, remarried when he was 17, and again divorced after a short time. Wetch would sometimes live with one parent, and sometimes with the other, or both when they were together, and each of his parents moved a number of times, though always in or around the Twin Cities area. Wetch never went to the same school for more than two years in a row. “It still probably affects me,” said Wetch in a 1999 interview, “To this day I’m not very good at interacting with people.”

In his first professional event in 1994, the Super Billiards Expo in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, he came third, only to be beaten by the eventual winner and dominant professional Mike Sigel with a score of 9-8. The following year, he claimed first place in the McDermott Masters, and was ranked 16th in the world according to the PBT and was named”the year’s rookie. In 1995, he took home the Huebler Cup and in 1996 an important tour stop in Great Gorge, New Jersey and three second-place finishes in tours and a tight 8-6 defeat at the end of the Camel World 9-ball Championship against The Magician, Efren Reyes. His PBT ranking climbed the following year to rank fifth on the planet.

When he was 15, Wetch had run 50 balls at straight pool. He was calling each shot prior to the shot which is a requirement for the game. At 16, he recorded an impressive 131 balls. Then, at 17 he took home in 1985 the Minnesota State Championship. Wetch had been an average student, but the pool was the only thing he thought about. He eventually dropped off of St. Paul’s Humboldt High School and began the role of a professional road-runner . He set out with a friend from his family who was named Joe Saad, who acted as his defender when he was on the road. In the meantime He had already earned the name “The Kid”, given to him by a boss from Minnesota Billiards, one of the rooms for pool in which Wetch was able to cut off his teeth.

The incident that eventually threw his life was from Houston the year 1993. He had scored a big winnings playing high stakes pool that night. The next morning, as he tried to get out of the hotel with his girlfriend two men forced the two back in the room at gunpoint and demanded the amount he taken home. Unsatisfied with the amount Wetch gave away to them, they slapped the bag on the top of his head, and then beat him. Although he was able to escape the beating with just minor injuries the man promised himself that he’d just make one last road trip to get stakes, and then the time came to end. He completed that last trip, and used the proceeds to establish the pool room along with David Wagner, his partner David Wagner, Jimmy’s Pro Billiards in Columbia Heights, Minnesota. The next year, in 1994, he made the most important step as an athlete on the road, putting away his anonymity and turning professional.

Despite his success on the pro tour, Wetch couldn’t make enough money on tournament purses alone. He said in a 1999 interview: “Back in 1996, I thought this game was going somewhere. We were on TV, we were making pretty good money. I was proud to be a pool player back then … [but now] I’m just going to put more effort and time into my room…. The bottom line is, you gotta make money to survive. I don’t want to be another statistic.” Today Wetch lives in Eagan, Minnesota, not far from his pool room.
