After scoring his first goal against Peterborough McNulty ruptured his kidney in Brighton’s home loss at Crewe Alexandra on 28 February 2009. The injury rendered his inactive for near future. On March 23 the news was released that McNulty was undergoing surgery in order to eliminate his right kidney. It was also announced that he would be out for around six months. McNulty made his debut for Brighton after suffering the devastating injury in a 2-0 preseason friendly win against Scunthorpe United, coming on as a substitute in the second half. McNulty was able to make his comeback for Brighton during the 1-0 loss in Leyton Orient in the Football League Trophy competition on the 6th of October, 2009. - McNulty was permitted to join Championship club Scunthorpe United on an initial one-month loan in order to aid his return to professional football under the manager Gus Poyet. In his brief time in Glanford Park, McNulty made three appearances in The Iron prior to returning back Brighton after the end of the Championship season.
During July 2010, he re-signed for Scunthorpe on a further six months’ loan deal, however after suffering an ankle injury requiring surgery, McNulty returned to Brighton on 5 December 2010.
On 24 June 2011, McNulty signed for Championship side Barnsley on a two-year contract. He was voted Players player of the year in his first season at Barnsley. The following season Barnsley manager Keith Hill announced McNulty as the new team captain.
The 2nd January of 2008 McNulty signed a contract of 18 months with the fellow League Two side Stockport County after he resisted an offer to sign a new contract with Macclesfield. McNulty got his first Stockport goal against Leyton The Orient on September 13 and then became captain of Stockport numerous times. He was a central defensive defender for Stockport in their promotion campaign by winning 3-2 in play-offs against Rochdale in Wembley.

In Runcorn, Cheshire, McNulty was a trialist with each Liverpool as well as Everton as a child before opting to join Everton’s academy system. McNulty was then signed by Wrexham following his release. After a few years with Wrexham the club, he was appointed the captain of their reserve team. He made just one appearance in the senior team in the absence of Steve Roberts against Stockport County in the Football League Trophy on 5 November 2003. Wrexham were defeated by 5-4. In March and February 2004 following his departure from Wrexham, McNulty spent five games at Bangor City in the League of Wales. He was then a member of an additional League of Wales side, Caernarfon Town, in summer 2004. On the 29th of November, it was revealed that McNulty was injured in his leg and was inactive for a number of months. When he returned to the side , he scored his first goal in league play in a 2-2 draw against Barnet.
During the January 2009 transfer window, McNulty attracted attention as Stockport looked to bring in money to solve financial difficulties. Stockport accepted an undisclosed offer from Brighton & Hove Albion, allowing McNulty to open contract negotiations with the club, however he refused the opportunity on 22 January, explaining that he did not wish to move to Brighton. On 31 January he was pulled out of the matchday squad for Stockport’s game against Hereford after being given permission to talk to an unnamed team.
