Pollihan was a forward on his Quincy University soccer team between 1972 between 1972 and 1976. Quincy was a member of the NAIA which was the dominant men’s soccer league in the 1960s and into the early 1980s. In 1970, the first year as a member of his team Quincy made it to the title game , where it was defeated by Davis and Elkins College. Pollihan was picked for be on the All Tournament team. In 1973, Quincy went on a run, winning the following three championships. Pollihan was named most outstanding forward in the tournament during 1973, 1974, and 1975. He further enhanced his honours when he was named the tournament’s MVP in 1974. Additionally the fact that he was an NAIA second team All American in 1974 and an Honorable Mention in the year 1975. In 1982 the NAIA admitted Pollihan to their football Hall of Fame. He was also admitted into the Quincy University Hall of Fame.
He was an assistant coach at the Baltimore Blast as early was in the fall of 1986. He quit the Blast on the 16th of August 1991, to be director of coaching for the Harrisburg Heat. In 1991 Harrisburg Heat, Harrisburg Heat an expansion franchise affiliated with the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL) appointed Pollihan as the first coach of the club. He guided the Heat to the playoffs every single one of the seven seasons he was the head coach. In 1995 the Heat made it to the championship series, only to lose into the St. Louis Ambush. Pollihan was also named the 1991-92 NPSL Coaching Award winner. After giving the coaching duties on to Richard Chinapoo 1999 Pollihan was shifted into the front office of the team as Vice Director of Soccer Operations, a position that he held until the beginning of January. Pollihan is third in the NPSL list of coaching wins with 155.
