After the move to Atlanta the writer would serve almost twenty years as a secretary in the Atlanta’s Grady Memorial Hospital before joining the faculty of creative writing in Emory University. In those years, Grimsley wrote prolifically, with 14 of his plays published between 1983 to 1993.
The novel was later followed with Dream Boy which received the American Library Association’s Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Book Award for Literature (Stonewall Book Award) as well as My Drowning, which won the Lila Wallace- Readers Digest Writers’ Awards. In the following years, he wrote his high- fantasy novel Kirith Kirin that won the Lambda Literary Award, or “Lammy” for the most outstanding LGBTQ-themed sci-fi or fantasy in the year 2000. This classically themed fantasy novel was then followed by two science-fiction novels: The Ordinary and The Last Green Tree (2006 sequel to The Ordinary). The novel Forgiveness by Grimsley (ISBN ISBN 9780292716698) was released in 2007. Four of his plays are included as Mr. Universe and Other Plays.
