Bunn later paid Skurdal the highest amount of money than other aide in the House in Oregon at the time. In the 1996 election the scandal contributed to his defeat against Democrat Darlene Hooley.
Bunn’s extended family includes several prominent public figures, including the twin brother Stan Bunn, a former Oregon Superintendent of Public Instruction and member of both houses of the state legislature. A third twin brother named Tom Bunn, is a former Yamhill County commissioner, and briefly as a state senator. Three brothers were members of state legislatures for only a brief time between July 1992 and January 1993.

James Lee Bunn was born in McMinnville and attended Dayton High School. He received a bachelor’s diploma at Northwestern Nazarene College in 1979 and is an active part of the Church of the Nazarene. Bunn worked in agribusiness and , from 1987 to when he was elected to Congress was in The Oregon National Guard.
Bunn Bunn, an Oregon Republican was a senator of the Oregon State Senate from 1987 until 1995. He was also the Republican head of the Senate from 1990 until 1995.
After leaving Congress, Bunn became a sheriff’s deputy at the Yamhill County jail. In 2008, he was a candidate for the Oregon House of Representatives in the state’s 24th district which includes McMinnville, but was defeated in the primary by Jim Weidner.
