Sinclair was born in London to the aforementioned Jewish family of Jewish descent. She was married to musician Trevor Horn in 1980 and they had four children. two boys, Aaron as well as William (formerly named Rebecca) and 2 daughters Gabriella as well as Alexandra. Aaron (known in the music industry under the moniker “Aaron Audio”), like his father is a musician and producer. He is a member of his band, Sam and the Womp and often DJs in London. Both Aaron and Ally Horn are co-directors of Sarm Studios.

In the early days, the label also helped to shape the very structure and format of pop music (its 12″ remixes getting chart positions of their own and its T-shirts becoming the uniform of the 80s) and turned every aspect of the business of pop into entertainment.

In 1978, Sarm studios launched the company for production Sarm productions headed by Sinclair. She also became managing her partner Trevor Horn during the time The Buggles split. She persuaded Horn to focus on the production of music, and helped him negotiate his first deal in conjunction with Dollar in addition to ABC.

In 1973 at the age of 21 Sinclair became one of the founding members of Sarm East Studios with her brother John Sinclair, and sound engineers Mike Stone and Gary Lyons. Sarm was soon transformed to become one of the more technologically modern recording facilities in London and was basically the first studio that had 24 tracks and attracted famous artists such as Queen which made recordings of A Night at the Opera and A Day at the Races partly in the Sarm studios. Other artists who recorded at Sarm East include Yes, INXS, The Clash and Madonna

Sinclair began the career path as a math teacher, but began working full-time at Sarm studios by 1977 when she was 25 years old.

In 1982 Sinclair and Horn founded Perfect Songs, a publishing company. Next year, together with NME writer Paul Morley they founded ZTT Records which soon boomed into success. Sinclair became ZTT’s managing director, while Paul Morley concentrated on marketing duties. In the same year Sinclair and Horn acquired Basing Street Studios from Island Records in exchange for distributing the ZTT label. The studio was renamed Sarm West Studios.
