John Gerard “Jez” Lowe (born 14 July 1955) is a English folk singer-songwriter from England. Lowe was was raised within County Durham, in a family that has Irish roots. He is famous for his compositions that address everyday life in North-East England, particularly in his home town in the vicinity of Easington Colliery. He was a student at St Francis RC Grammar School close to Hartlepool and later , he studied in languages in the prestigious Sunderland Polytechnic. Lowe performs as solo artist as well as in his backing group, The Bad Pennies. Alongside singing his own songs, Lowe accompanies himself and The Bad Pennies on guitar as well as harmonica, cittern and piano.
In addition to In addition, to the BBC Radio Ballads series, Jez Lowe has also produced several radio broadcasts on BBC radio, starting with the series of five programs in 1999, titled “A Song For Geordie” that he wrote and presented. It was a thorough introduction to the various features of traditional folk in North East England, and included interviews with Ed Pickford, Benny Graham, Vin Garbutt, Mark Knopfler, Annie Fentiman, Terri Freeman, and many more. A program from this series was re-aired by BBC6 Music in 2018. He’s also been a guest-hosting for The BBC Radio 4 series Open Country in a program that focuses on Tynemouth and additional contributions to the show as an interviewee during the past 10 years. He’s scheduled to host an additional episode of Open Country later in 2019.
In 2008 Lowe was nominated as ‘Folksinger of the Year’in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, but ultimately lost the category to young Scottish singer and instrumentalist Julie Fowlis.
Since 2011, Jez has been part of a quartet known as The Pitmen Poets, alongside Benny Graham, Billy Mitchell and Bob Fox. They have toured extensively every few years around the UK, and have released three albums of songs about the coal mining communities of North east England.
The track “A Lass to Want Me” was composed after meeting David Miedzianik, an autistic man from Rotherham in 1993. It first came out as a single in the year 1997, on A Season of Changes: The Autistic Awareness Album, a collection of songs about autism, released as a fundraiser for an autism center in Doncaster The album was released in 2003 on an extended edition of the album he released in 1998., The Parish Notices.

John Gerard Lowe grew up experiencing the demise of the coal mining industry which was the basis of the region’s economic image for generations. Many of his compositions deal with the economic hardships that people in the North Country has suffered as due to the decline of this industry as well as the social implications from it. “Galloways,” “Nearer to Nettles,” and “These Coal Town Days” are among the songs that discuss economic problems. Within the wider category of songs with social impact popular Lowe compositions include “Big Meeting Day,” “Greek Lightning,” and “Last of the Widows.” (His tune, “Last of the Widows” was composed in 1991 in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the disaster at the pit that occurred at Easington Colliery.) Many other songs written by Lowe are about the universal issues of poverty and the limited opportunities for social advancement in the region.
In 2006 Lowe contributed to the BBC Radio 2 ‘Radio Ballads’ documentary series broadcast on Radio 2 as a homage to the original series of the same title pioneered by Ewan MacColl and Charles Parker in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Jez Lowe was commissioned to write 22 new songs for the documentary- folk series, which were not all performed by Lowe but featured guest vocals from the likes of Barry Coope, Bob Fox and many more. The series went on to win two Sony Radio Academy Awards.
