Billauer had an accident aged 17 years old on the 25th of March 1996. He landed his head against a sandbar that was shallow after being knocked off of his surfboard by waves. The force cracked his neck, which cut off his spinal cord at C6 level. This instantly made him quadriplegic.
After having graduated from Malibu High School Billauer was able to enroll at San Diego State University, with a specialization in Communication. The school graduated him in the year 2002. In addition, Jesse is an inspirational and inspirational speaker and the Executive Director of the foundation for non- profits that he created, “Life Rolls On.” 1. Through the foundation Jesse plays a leadership role in raising activating and raising awareness to promote spinal cord injury-related health and quality-of-life programs.
In December 2006 Billauer broke his femur while surfing large waves on the North Shore of Oahu (Hawaii). This injury led to the development of improved equipment for disabled surfers. He has recovered and is back in the water surfing again.
