In 2008, at the time Ward had made the decision to quit writing and join an nursing program, Where the Line Bleeds was accepted by Doug Seibold at Agate Publishing. The novel was chosen as an Book Club Selection by Essence magazine. Interviewed by CNN’s Ed Lavandera on November 16, 2011, she said that both her nomination and her victory had come as a surprise, given that the novel had been largely ignored by mainstream reviewers. “When I hear people talking about the fact that they think we live in a post-racial America, … it blows my mind, because I don’t know that place. I’ve never lived there. … If one day, … they’re able to pick up my work and read it and see … the characters in my books as human beings and feel for them, then I think that that is a political act”, Ward stated in a television interview with Anna Bressanin of BBC News on December 22, 2011.

Ward received an Alex Award for Salvage the Bones on January 23, 2012. The Alex Awards are given out each year by the Young Adult Library Services Association to ten books written for adults that resonate strongly with young people aged 12–18. Commenting on the winning books in School Library Journal, former Alex Award committee chair, Angela Carstensen described Salvage the Bones as a novel with “a small but intense following – each reader has passed the book to a friend.”

As of 2005, Ward was awarded in 2005, she received her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Michigan. Soon afterward she and her family suffered the effects of the hurricane Katrina. The house they lived in DeLisle inundated The Ward family set off in their vehicle to go to a local church however, they ended up stuck in a field that was brimming with tractor. The homeowners of this land looked over their belongings they were hesitant to invite the Wards to their homes and claimed they were crowded. In a state of shock and exhaustion, the family was eventually sheltered by a white family further across the street.

Jesmyn Ward (born on April 1st 1977) is an American novelist who is also an Associate Professor of English of English at Tulane University. She was awarded the award in 2011 for National Book Award for Fiction for her novel Salvage the Bones. In 2012, she also received an Alex Award for the story about family love and community that spans the 10 days leading up to the hurricane Katrina as well as the day that the cyclone hit and the day following. In the years prior to joining Tulane, Ward was an assistant professor of Creative Writing at the University of South Alabama. From 2008 to 2010, Ward had a Stegner Fellowship at Stanford University. Ward was also an John and Renee Grisham Writer in Residence at the University of Mississippi for the academic year 2010-2011. Ward was appointed to the Tulane faculty Tulane in the autumn of 2014. The year before, she published her memoir Men We Rap. In 2017 she was the winner of an MacArthur “genius grant” from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. In the was the same year that she also won another National Book Award for her third novel, Sing, Unburied, Sing, which made her the first woman to receive the two National Book Awards for Fiction. The novel also earned an Anisfield-Wolf Book Prize.

The first member of her family to go to college, she completed an B.A. in English in 1999 as well as an M.A. in communication and media studies in 2000. Both in 1999 at Stanford University. Ward decided to pursue a career in writing to pay tribute to the memory of her brother whom she lost to drunk drivers in the month of October 2000, shortly after she finished the master’s program.

In July 2011, Ward wrote that she had finished the first draft of her third book, calling it the hardest thing she had ever written. It was a memoir titled Men We Reaped and was published in 2013. The book explores the lives of her brother and four other young black men who lost their lives in her hometown.
