It was in February of 2006 that it was revealed that Leko was to leave Dynamo Kyiv, having turned away a contract offer. The Ukrainian later signed with AS Monaco on a free transfer on June 4, 2006.
In August 2014 he moved to NK Lokomotiva on loan. In 2015, he permanently joined Lokomotiva for the last season of his professional career.
Selected to be a part of the country at the 2006 World Cup, Leko made two substitute appearances against Brazil as well as Australia. Leko was also in the final team of Euro 2008.

The career of Leko began in the club of GNK Dinamo Zagreb in 2000 in his home country of Croatia but the club did not immediately see success. After a short period on loan with NK Croatia Sesvete, he was a regular player in 2001/2002. He was instrumental in aiding Dinamo Zagreb win the Croatian Cup and winning the trophy with NK Varteks and being named Man of the Match. Leko later moved into Dynamo Kyiv in 2002 for EUR5.5m (a record at the time for a club). In his debut campaign during his time in Ukraine, Dynamo won the double, which included Leko performing 18 matches.
Leko was a part of the team that made its Croatia debut on the pitch in 2002, against Hungary however, he was not part of Croatia’s 2002 World Cup squad. He scored in the 4-0 win against Belgium in the Euro 2004 qualifier, and was part of the final stages of the squad however, he played only 22 minutes throughout the tournament.
In July 2009, The Times reported that he had turned down a move to English Premiership club Wolverhampton Wanderers as they would not meet his wage demands of 30,000 UK pounds per week (approx 49,000 US dollars) net. On 18 June 2010 Bucaspor signed the Croatian midfielder to a two-year deal on a free transfer from AS Monaco. On 25 May, it was confirmed that Leko signed a two- year deal with GNK Dinamo Zagreb.
