Morehead became interim director for the Office of Legal Affairs in 1998. In 1999, he was promoted to director and associate provost of the UGA Honors Program. In 2004 Morehead was elevated to vice provost for academic affairs. He then became vice president of instruction from December 2006 until December 2009.
On January 28, 2013, Morehead was announced as the sole finalist to be the 22nd president of the University of Georgia. Following a waiting period required by state law, the board of regents confirmed him to his new position, and he assumed office on July 1, 2013. He is the sixth president to be an internal hire from within the university, with the most recent prior being O.C. Aderhold in 1950.
The year 1986 was the first time he was re-admitted in 1986 to the University of Georgia as assistant professor of legal studies within the Terry College of Business. He has been an academic position inside Terry College ever since, becoming Associate Professor in the year 1992, and full professor in 1999. He was a professor in 1995. worked as a visiting professor in legal business at The University of Michigan. in 2004, Morehead was awarded the Josiah Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professorship, which is one of the most prestigious distinctions given to a teacher in the classroom. From 1986 until 1995, he was the advisor for UGA Law School’s prestigious moot court team. He has been the judge for several of moot courts.
