Jason Carl Urquidez (born September 12th 1982) is a professional Mexican-American baseball player who is a free agent. He played previously with the Tokyo Yakult Swallows of Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB).

Urquidez was a part of both the 2014 and 2013 seasons as well as a part of the 2015 season playing for his team, the Lancaster Barnstormers of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. As the team’s closer, he’s currently the leader of the franchise in saves, racking up 54 of them.

On June 2, 2015, Urquidez had his contract purchased by the Toros de Tijuana of the Mexican League. He became the team’s closer prior to the 2016 season, and that same year finished with 26 saves out of 27 opportunities. The following year Urquidez had his most successful to date, earning 28 saves and finishing with a 5-0 record and a league-leading 0.98 ERA, along with a 0.83 WHIP and 56 strikeouts across 46 innings pitched, culminating in the first- ever league championship for the team. He was selected to the LMB’s All-Star team and won the ‘Reliever of the Year’ award. He is currently the franchise’s leader in saves, with 64 earned through 4 seasons spent with the club.

On June 20, 2018, after pitching the first-half of the season in Tijuana, Urquidez was signed by the Tokyo Yakult Swallows of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball. He became a free agent after the season.

The 23rd of June, 2012 Urquidez signed a minor league contract for the Boston Red Sox. As a pitcher with the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs out of the bullpen, he concluded the year with a record of 4-2 and a 2.85 ERA. He decided to go free agency on the 2nd of November 2012.

Urquidez went to Central Arizona College and pitched for the team for two years, helping them win their first NJCAA National Championship during his freshman year in 2002. Following his time in Junior college Urquidez received a call from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 48th round of 2002 MLB draft, but decided to play for the college team. Later, he moved into Arizona State University, where the team played his senior and junior year in 2005 and 2004 respectively. Urquidez ended his ASU career with a 22-7 record and a 3.70 ERA in 48 games (34 starts) over two seasons. He was selected to the first team of All Pac-10 in his 2004 junior year after scoring 12 wins. He was picked at the eleventh pick of 2004’s MLB Draft (318th overall) by the Cincinnati Reds, but stayed at ASU to finish his senior season. He received a selection at the 17th spot of the MLB Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Urquidez was a pitcher for his time in the Diamondbacks farm system from 2005 to 2011 beginning as a member of his team, the Yakima Bears of the Class-A Short Season league. He progressed up to Triple-A pitching for and the Tucson Sidewinders and later the Reno Aces, operating as relief pitcher as well as closer. He was released after the season of 2011.

In August 2013, Urquidez signed a minor-league contract with the Los Angeles Angels. He elected free agency on November 4, 2013.
