Long was a college baseball player at Chandler-Gilbert Community College as well as Ohio State University before he became a professional player. Kevin Long, Long’s father, is the current Washington Nationals hitting coach and the former New York Yankees hitting coach.
He transferred to Ohio State University after his freshman year to play for the Ohio State Buckeyes, a Division I baseball team. Long started his Buckeyes career in relief pitching, but was soon promoted to the starting rotation. Long was a sophomore and led the Buckeyes’ 2.66 ERA. This was the sixth-best ERA among Big Ten Conference pitchers. It also had the most innings pitched. Long was selected to the All-Big Ten team’s first roster. He played that summer for the Bourne Braves, Cape Cod Baseball League. Long suffered from warts in his throwing hand during his junior year. Long had a 4.02 ERA and was not drafted in the 2013 MLB Draft. In 2013, Long pitched again for the Bourne Braves, his 0.30 ERA was the league’s best. Damon Oppenheimer, the amateur scouting director at New York Yankees, noticed Long. Long signed as an undrafted agent with the Yankees in August 2013.
On December 14, 2018, Long signed a minor league deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He was released on March 21, 2019.
Long signed with Yankees and appeared in six games during the 2013 season as a relief pitcher for the Gulf Coast Yankees (Rookie-level Gulf Coast League) and Tampa Yankees (Class A-Advanced Florida State League). He reported to spring training in 2014 and was assigned to Charleston RiverDogs, Class A South Atlantic League. Long’s 1.64 ERA was Charleston’s in 11 games. He was the league’s Pitcher-of-the Week for the week between May 26 and June 1. He was promoted to Tampa on June 5. He was promoted to the Trenton Thunder in the Class AA Eastern League after six appearances with Tampa. In which he compiled a 2.77 ERA. Long pitched in 28 games, 18 starts, and had a 12-5 record with a 2.18 ERA. He also had 122 strikeouts and 22 walks. Long also pitched in 144.1 innings.

Long attended Cactus Shadows High School, Cave Creek, Arizona. Long played infield and pitched baseball, but he did not make the school’s varsity roster until he was a senior. The Arizona Republic honored Long with a place on their All-Class 4A baseball team in 2010. Long was not offered a scholarship by any college in the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s division I. Long attended Chandler-Gilbert Community College after he was done with high school. He played college baseball for Chandler-Gilbert Coyotes. Long was a freshman and he pitched 50 innings to a 1.62 earned-run average (ERA). However, a broken wrist ended his season early. He was able to play in college summer baseball for the East Texas Pumpjacks, Texas Collegiate League, after he had fully recovered.
Long returned to Ohio State in December 2013 to complete his degree.
Long was released by the Yankees in April 2016. He signed a minor league deal with the Washington Nationals and spent the 2016 season pitching for the Nationals’ AA and AAA clubs. He finished the 2016 season with a 5-6 record and a 3.20 ERA. On November 27, 2017, Long resigned a minor league deal with the Nationals, who invited him to spring training. He elected free agency on November 2, 2018.
