After the turn of the century, Sandelin experienced a loss in form that culminated in his return to school in 2005. He was able to regain his European Tour card after he hired a coach for his first time in his professional career. Although he lost a few games, he managed to keep his playing status for three more years. He beat Lee Slattery by EUR77 for the 2008 last automatic card. He was a total of 12 times in the European Tour Qualifying School.

The European Tour tournament Lancome Trophy at Golf de Saint-Nom-la-Breteche, 30 km west of Paris, France in September 1997, was won by Mark O’Meara, one stroke ahead of Sandelin. O’Meara had his ball replaced half an inch closer than the marker indicated. This was noticed by a Swedish television viewer. Sandelin, who had written to O’Meara March 1998, requested an explanation. He sent O’Meara a video of the incident. O’Meara claimed he did not intend to gain any advantage. He sought advice from the PGA, European Tours and informed him that the tournament had ended and that the result was valid. Sandelin made the story public and demanded O’Meara return the trophy and prize money. O’Meara admitted that he might have violated the rules of golf while he was playing for the 1997 Lancome Trophy.

Sandelin became a professional in 1987. Despite several visits to qualifying schools, he did not win a European Tour spot until 1995.
