In 2015, he made his debut in the IAAF Diamond League at the Prefontaine classic. He came seventh in an international field. Schuurmans threw 66.10m (221 ft 10/4 in) in June. This throw, which was set in windy conditions, made him the favorite for the national championships. He also went undefeated against an American at this point in the season. At the 2015 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships he performed as expected, winning his first national title with a throw at 64.64m (212 feet /4 in). He was also guaranteed a spot at the 2015 World Championships. Schuurmans placed 29th in the 2015 World Championships in Athletics – Men’s discus throw with a throw of 57.74m (189ft 5 in).

Jorge Fernandez from Cuba is the current Pan American champion. Schuurmans was ranked 33rd globally for the season, and fifth among American men.
