Braxton was a college basketball player for Louisiana Tech. She helped to lead the Lady Techsters towards national championships in 1982 and 1981. She was a sophomore when she played in 1982. However, she was the tournament MVP and the top scorer. Braxton was awarded the WBCA Player-of-the Year award in 1984.
Braxton was part of the USA National Team at the 1983 World Championships in Sao Paulo (Brazil). The Soviet Union won two of the six games that they played, while the USA team won six. The USA team led by nine points at halftime. However, the Soviets regained the lead and shot the final shot. This gave the USSR a victory of 85-84. The USA team won four more games to set up the gold medal match against USSR. The game was close and tied at 82 points with six seconds remaining. The Soviet Union’s Elena Chausova received the inbounds play and made the winning shot in the final seconds. This gave the USSR the gold medal with an overall score of 84-82. The silver medal was awarded to the USA team. Braxton averaged 8.9 point per game.
In 1984, the USA sent its National team to the 1984 William Jones Cup competition in Taipei, Taiwan, for pre-Olympic practice. The team easily beat each of the eight teams they played, winning by an average of just under 50 points per game. Braxton averaged 6.7 points per game.
