She represented Ogmore in the National Assembly for Wales from 1999 until the election of 2016. Her principal contribution to the Assembly was through her chairing of the Social Justice and Regeneration Committee.

The Chair of the Social Justice and Regeneration Committee was appointed to her. The Western Mail described her as “well below par performer” and gave her a rating 4 out of 10 in its evaluation of Assembly members at the end 2003-07 term. She did increase her majority in 2007’s election.

Gregory voted for a landmark building as the Assembly’s headquarters in June 2000, after she rebelled against the Labour government. When it became clear that Ron Davies had applied for jobs in non-political fields without notifying the Labour leadership, she called Ron Davies to her aid. Gregory declined to be selected to succeed her father, who died suddenly in December 2001. Although Gregory was not able to survive the death of Sir Ray Powell, she was able to re-elect herself in 2003 with a 6,504 majority.

Gregory, the daughter Raymond Powell, was born in Treorchy. He was Labour Party Member for Ogmore since 1979. She attended Bridgend Grammar School for Girls, and was a Constituency Secretary to her father starting in 1991. Gregory was elected Labour candidate for the constituency in which her father lived, for the 1999 election to the National Assembly for Wales. She held the seat with ease and was elected Labour group whip to the Assembly. Gregory, along with three other whips, resigned from this position in February 2000 when Alun Michael resigned his post as First Minister. The three were loyal to Michael and refused to serve under Andrew Davies, who was plotting to remove them.
