Janet Toro is one of the most popular and richest Artist who was born on August 24, 1963 in Osorno, Los Lagos Region, Chile. Janet Toro was born in Osorno in Chile on August 24, 1963. Her work focuses on an anti- establishment message as well as the illumination of social injustices that were created by the Pinochet dictatorship. Her most famous work is El cuerpo de la memory (The body and the mind), which she performed for ninety-four days at Santiago’s Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes. She moved to Germany shortly after, where she was a performance artist. In 2014, she returned to Chile.

Janet Toro studied fine art at the Universidad de Chile in Santiago and was affiliated with the artist activist group, Agrupación de Plásticos Jóvenes. During the time Chile was under the military dictatorship, Toro stopped painting to pursue activist and performance art. The Chilean group, Colectivo de Acciones de Arte (CADA) served as inspiration as Toro created more anti- dictatorial work. Shortly after her return to Chile in 2014, she produced the work In Situ at the Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos in Santiago. This work addressed the loss of the Mapuche culture in contemporary Chile.
