Janelle Saffin is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on November 1, 1954 in Queensland, Australia. Janelle Anne Saffin, born 1 November 1954, is an Australian Labor Party politician. Since 23 March 2019, she has been the New South Wales Legislative Assembly Member for Lismore. From 2007 to 2013, she was the Member of Page in the Australian House of Representatives. She was also a Member of New South Wales Legislative Council between 1995 and 2003.

Saffin lost the 2013 election to Kevin Hogan, a Nationals candidate. He was defeated by her in the 2010 election which improved her vote. She suffered a 7.2% swing in her favor in 2013 however.

At a TAFE rally on 23 September 2015, with Labor’s Shadow Minister for Vocational Education, Sharon Bird, Janelle Saffin announced that she would again contest the federal seat of Page at the 2016 election. She was subsequently defeated by Kevin Hogan.

On 22 April 2018 Saffin won preselection to contest the NSW State seat of Lismore, which she won on 23 March 2019.

Saffin had previously met Jose Ramos-Horta, East Timorese foreign Minister, a few times as an MP. In 2004, she left politics to move to East Timor as Ramos- Horta’s chief political advisor and legal advisor. She was there for three years, helping to rebuild the country. She stayed with Ramos-Horta until his election as Prime Minister and President in 2007. In 2007, she resigned, choosing to go back to Australia to contest the preselection for the National Party’s federal seat of Page. It is located in her hometown of Lismore. She was up against Ian Tiley, a right-faction candidate, but she won.

At the 1991 state election, she ran as the Labor candidate in the Lismore seat. However, she was defeated by Bill Rixon, the incumbent National Party MP. She was able to contest and win preselection for the eighth position on the Labor ticket for Legislative Council in 1995. Labor’s win at the election saw her comfortably elected on election day, though on preferences.

Saffin was a member of the Socialist Left party faction throughout her term. She was active in advocating for progressive causes inside and outside parliament. Saffin was particularly interested in East Timor’s fate and Burma’s future. She was also an official observer at the 1999 East Timor independence referendum. She was active in feminist causes and was one of two Australians to attend the Global Forum of Women Political Leaders (Makino) in 2000. As an anti-nuclear activist, she was involved in campaigns against French nuclear testing in Pacific and Jabiluka uranium mines. She tried to win Labor preselection for a second term prior to the 2003 state elections, but she was unable to secure one of three winning positions in her faction, which forced her out of politics.

On 21 March 2013 she resigned as Government Whip after an attempt to replace Prime Minister Julia Gillard with the previous Prime Minister Kevin Rudd failed. The attempt foundered when Rudd unexpectedly announced that he would not contest the position. Saffin had indicated support for Rudd.
