Jane Tomlinson Biography

Jane Tomlinson is one of the most popular and richest Athlete who was born on February 21, 1964 in Wakefield, Michigan, United States. Jane Emily Goward, sixth child of ten children born to a dentist in Wakefield, Yorkshire was born in 1964. The family immigrated to Australia when she was 11 years old, but she returned three years later. Tomlinson applied in 1990 to the University of Leeds to study Mathematics. After discovering a lump in her breast, Tomlinson decided to enroll at Leeds General Infirmary instead and train as a radiographer. She had already married Mike Tomlinson, and they had two daughters, Suzanne, and Rebecca. Later, they had a son named Steven. After qualifying in 1993, Tomlinson went on to study at postgraduate level to become a paediatric radiographer. After a lumpectomy in 1993, the cancer returned. She had to have a second mastectomy and underwent two rounds of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Jane Tomlinson received a 12-month-term of life after the cancer spread to her bones, lungs and liver in 2000.

After having published The Luxury of Time in 2005 she released the second volume of her memoirs You Can’t Take It With You (2006). Jane Tomlinson and Mike Tomlinson founded Jane Tomlinson’s Run For All in January 2007. This 10km charity run took place in June 2007. After four rounds of chemotherapy, she was diagnosed with chronic heart disease. Jane Tomlinson, who was elevated to the rank of CBE in June 2007, died at St Gemma’s Hospice in Leeds, West Yorkshire, three months after her promotion. Arthur Roche, Roman Catholic Bishop Leeds, conducted her Requiem Mass at the Roman Catholic Leeds Cathedral, on 14 September 2007. Later that day, she was cremated in private family ceremonies. Steven, Tomlinson’s ten year-old son, received her CBE at Buckingham Palace from Charles, Prince Of Wales, on 15 November 2007.

Jane raised over £1.85 million through a series of gruelling challenges including several long-distance bike rides, marathons, triathlons and a full Ironman triathlon. Since her death the charity that she founded has announced a new fundraising target of £5 million. As of February 2015 £7.6 million has been raised, and in September 2017 the campaign announced fundraising had surpassed £10m.

Tomlinson cycled 3,800 miles across the United States for nine weeks in July and August 2006. This was to raise PS250,000. This was her last athletic challenge.
