Saville, from an athletically-inclined family, competed in swimming and surf lifesaving events as well as walking as a junior athlete. She competed in four Olympics with a 1996 midfield finish. Saville was disqualified from the 20-km racewalking event at 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. She was heading into the tunnel to the stadium for the final stretch when she fell. Lifting is a common practice in race walking and the previous leader had been disqualified. Saville fell to her knees in pain. When asked what she needed, Saville replied, “A gun to kill myself.” Saville soon regained her composure and was openly philosophical about her loss.

Saville also won three gold medals at Commonwealth Games in the 10 kilometer walk in 1998 and the 20 km walk in 2002. She has been awarded the Australian women’s race-walking championship five times. She was the Australian flagbearer during the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

Saville announced her retirement from competitive racewalking in February 2009, with her future plans including continued work in community health and fitness promotion, and a role on the IAAF race walking technical committee.
