Jane Amsterdam was the third child of four and was born in Philadelphia on June 15, 1951. Fay Amsterdam was her mother and Morton, her father, were housewives. She graduated in 1973 and joined Connecticut Magazine, where she served successively as an assistant editor, associate editor, executive editor, and editor. She was the founding managing editor for New Jersey Monthly in 1976. She left New Times magazine in 1978 to become editor. The magazine was closed at the end of the year.
She was married to Jonathan Z. Larsen (former editor-in-chief at The Village Voice), from 1985 to 2000. In 1990, she adopted Edward Roy.
A colleague at Manhattan, inc. recalled: “one of her great gifts is that she packages stories so that people love to read them.” She also had a reputation for being hard to work with, going through two executive editors before the third issue. In March 1987, Amsterdam abruptly resigned in a dispute over editorial control, accusing Lipson of wanting to favor advertisers. Afterwards, the Wall Street Journal approached her to develop a new business magazine, but the proposal was dropped after the October 1987 stock market crash.
After departing the Post, Amsterdam turned down a job offer from the Los Angeles Times and dropped plans for a proposed magazine about competition between people. Amsterdam was a member of the American Society of Newspaper Editors, and served as a judge for the National Magazine Awards in 1988 and 1989, and the Pulitzer Prize in 1989 and 1990. Her alma mater awarded her an honorary degree in 1989. In 1993 she became a senior producer on the ABC News program Day One before retiring from the media industry. That same year, she took up the sport of competitive carriage driving.

Jane Ellen Amsterdam, born June 15, 1951, is an American former magazine editor and newspaper editor. She joined The Washington Post in 1970 as section editor after holding successive magazine editorships. Later, she was the founding editor of Manhattan inc. magazine and is widely credited for making it a vibrant, National Magazine Award-winning publication. Later, she joined the New York Post as the first woman editor of a major New York City newspaper. She worked at the New York Post to improve the paper’s credibility as well as its journalism standards. She was one of six women who edited a newspaper that had a circulation exceeding 100,000 when she left the Post in 1989.
She edited The American Lawyer six months in 1979, and then served seven weeks as the executive editor of New York magazine for seven weeks. She was later hired by The Washington Post to be Style section editor. She worked there until 1983. She worked with Patrick Tyler and Bob Woodward at the Post on an article about allegations that Max C., the CIA deputy director, had used improper stock practices. Hugel. He resigned shortly after the publication of the article. Amsterdam was appointed deputy editor of the investigative unit at Woodward shortly afterward.
