Pittman broke her cartilage in her right leg just before the Athens Olympics. This happened during a warm up for a track meet at Zurich. She had been favoured to win 400m hurdles. She finished 5th after undergoing surgery in London just one week before the opening of the games.
Pittman won the 400m hurdles title in a Games record 53.82 seconds. This was Pittman’s first major title in the 400 m hurdles event since her 2004 injury to her knee and subsequent stress fractures in both her back.
Pittman attended Matthew Pearce Primary School, Mount St Benedict College and Girraween High School in western Sydney. She is second cousin to diver Melissa Wu. She competed until April 2006 under her maiden name Pittman, then under her married name Rawlinson, and in 2009, following the breakdown of her marriage, as Pittman-Rawlinson.
She carried a slight injury through her 2007 season, having surgery later in the year to remove loose cartilage and floating bone fragments in the second toe of her right foot.
Pittman-Rawlinson, along with Rosemary Hayward, Caitlin Willis, Tamsyn Lewis and Caitlin Wilis, was also a member the gold-medal-winning 4×400 m relay team that won Australia gold at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. The 2006 Aussie team won the gold medal, despite being disqualified by the England team for a baton change violation. Pittman wrote an apology letter to the English team, and offered her gold medal. She blamed Lewis for the disqualification. Lewis, along with Pittman, raised concerns about the improper starting position of Natasha Danvers Smith to the officials. According to the ABC Sports Desk, the officials moved to disqualify England. Brad McStravick was interviewed by the ABC TV show Offsiders about Pittman’s motives for writing the letter. He said that he knew Pittman was going to spend at least half of the year in England, and that he was trying to make peace with her so she wouldn’t be enmeshed in animosity.

Jana Pittman–Rawlinson was born 9 November 1982. She is an Australian athlete who specializes in the 400m run and 400m hurdles events. From 2003 to 2007, she was a two-time world champion at the 400 m hurdles. She was also awarded the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2002 and 2006.
Pittman won the 400m hurdles at 1999 World Youth Championships in Athletics in Bydgoszcz. She also became the treble champion in 200m, 400m and 400m hurdles at that year’s national championships. She became the first woman to win both the 400 m hurdles flat and hurdles double at an IAAF or IOC championship in 2000, in this instance, the 2000 World Junior Championships Santiago (Chile).
On 31 March 2006, Pittman married English athlete Chris Rawlinson at Morningstar Estate on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria. Rawlinson, also a specialist 400 m hurdler, coached Jana from 2004–2009. On 14 December 2006 she gave birth to the couple’s first child, son Cornelis Levi. She later stated that she had gone for a hard twenty-minute run on the morning of the birth and “felt like a whale”.
