Jan Simonsen is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on March 3, 1953 in Stavanger, Rogaland, Norway. Simonsen was the son of businessmen Viktor Holck Simonsen (1913-1990) and Martha Espevoll (1917-91). Simonsen was raised in Valand and lived in Eiganes for a while. Rogaland University College gave him a degree in social science and he also has a minor history. He was the editor of the publications Strandbuen and Video- og TV-guiden, as well as the official Progress Party publication Fremskritt. He wasn’t married.

Simonsen was expelled by the Progress Party on 19 October 2001 after having been a member for 25 years. Geir Mo, the secretary general of the Progress Party, made the following statement to NTB: “The Progress Party has, upon a thorough evaluation, determined that it is better for both parties to separate.” Simonsen was previously under scrutiny for his role as a representative in assisting a friend to obtain a liquor licence. Simonsen believes that Carl I. Hagen, the party chairman, misused his position to exclude him and other high-ranking members from 2001 for non-existent reasons. Since then, he has had a bad relationship with Carl I. Hagen as well as his wife Eli Hagen. However, he is still largely in good terms with Progress Party politicians, including Siv Jensen.

Since then, Simonsen sat as an independent MP until 2005. From 2003 to 2004, he was vice chairman of the Democrats, a party founded in 2002 largely by other Progress Party members who had been excluded around the same time as Simonsen. He withdrew from the Democrats as a member in 2007. While he was not a member of the Democrats, he however ran as the top candidate for the party in Akershus for the 2009 parliamentary election.

In 2005 Simonsen was a competitor on the television show Robinson VIP, a Scandinavian adaptation and celebrity edition of Survivor, achieving the position as runner-up. His favourite Album was Satisfaction by The Rolling Stones, and his favourite writer was Leon Uris.

He was christened in Church of Norway and remained a strong supporter of that church as an adult, but he left the church during Gunnar Stalsett’s term as bishop of Oslo. As Stalsett was the chairman of Centre Party in 1970s, Simonsen believed the decision to become a bishop had been too politicized. Simonsen rejoined the church after Stalsett’s resignation in 2005. Ole Christian Kvarme succeeded him.
