Jan Reimer is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on May 23, 1952 in Edmonton, Canada. Reimer was the daughter of Neil Reimer who would lead the Alberta New Democratic Party. She graduated from the University of Alberta in 1973 with a Bachelor of Art. She spent three years traveling in Southeast Asia, Australia and India after graduating. From 1975 to 1977, she was a welfare officer in Darwin, Australia. She returned to Edmonton in 1977 and was appointed the citizens’ coordinator for the Calder Action Committee. This is a neighborhood advocacy organization.
Reimer was first elected to office in 1980’s municipal election. She finished second out of eight candidates in Ward 1 behind incumbent Ron Hayter. This showing, which included two candidates per ward, was enough to allow her to be elected to Edmonton City Council. In 1983 and 1986 she was reelected, placing first in the fields of six and four candidates, respectively. Hayter placed second.
Reimer tried to improve relations with both the provincial government, whose relations with Edmonton were strained after fifteen of the city’s seventeen seats in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta had gone to opposition members in the 1989 provincial election. She resumed the deprecated tradition of having the council meet periodically with the city’s government caucus (though the caucus consisted only of Nancy Betkowski and Doug Main). She also tried to build bridges with rival Calgary, meeting early with its mayor Al Duerr and proclaiming after the meeting that competition between the cities, while inevitable, “should be healthy and based on cities’ strengths instead of…running down the other city.”
She was re-elected by a narrower margin in 1992 (defeating businessmen and former Edmonton Eskimos football player Bill Smith), but went down to a narrow defeat at Smith’s hand in 1995, with the winner capitalizing on a perception that Reimer’s administration was hostile to business interests.
Reimer, an alderman was a vocal critic of many aspects of the status quo. Reimer argued that the city made too many concessions to land developers and questioned why developers failed to meet the conditions council made contingent on these concessions. Reimer was critical of the council’s tendency to make important decisions in front of cameras. Reimer was critical of council’s decision to negotiate a $160,000 settlement after the resignation of the city’s solicitor. He had been accused in a scandal of sexual harassment. Reimer also claimed that Edmonton’s 1979 annexe of semi-rural land was a mistake. She stated that it had not benefited Edmonton at any time; we will be paying years down for road maintenance and snow clearing.

Janice Rhea Reimer, born May 23, 1952, is a Canadian politician. She was the first woman to be elected mayor of Edmonton, Alberta from 1989 to 1995. Her time in office was notable for the creation of a new waste management program, which included curbside collection of recyclables, and the repeated efforts of Peter Pocklington to obtain concessions from the city in return for his agreement to not move the Edmonton Oilers. She is a lifetime New Democrat, even though she has not sought office at either the provincial or federal level.
Reimer was the first social democratic mayor of the city since Ivor Dent resigned in 1974. Some of her left-wing initiatives earned her criticism. Reimer refused to wear the ceremonial chain of city office made from beaver fur, in a controversial decision. The city administration was instructed to create a strategy to attract more people from historically disadvantaged groups. However, she did not call for any hiring quotas. She criticised oil and gas development on Lubicon Cree lands. An alderman, who had endorsed the development of oil and natural gas on the lands, criticized her for this and urged her to “resist from expressing opinions on matters that are not within [the city]’s] jurisdiction.”
In 1988, mayor Laurence Decore resigned to lead the Alberta Liberal Party, and Terry Cavanagh was selected by council to complete his term. Reimer challenged Cavanagh’s bid to keep the job in the 1989 election. The campaign was acrimonious: Cavanagh called Reimer’s endorsement by the Canadian Union of Public Employees a “blatant attempt to muscle votes for an opponent,” and suggested that Reimer harboured a “socialist hidden agenda” and that the city would become known as “Redmonton” if she was elected. Reimer won a landslide victory.
