After an apprenticeship at BHF-Bank Krahnen went on to study business administration at Goethe-University Frankfurt, where he received a PhD in 1984. He received his postdoctoral lecture qualification, or habilitation, from Freie Universitat Berlin four years later. Krahnen, who had previously been at the University of Cologne as well as the Justus Liebig University Giessen in Germany, returned to Frankfurt in 1995. He was also the director of the Center for Financial Studies.
Krahnen was part of a German government expert panel that made proposals for reforming international financial markets between 2008 and 2012. Six reports were published by the Commission, which was chaired in part by Otmar Issing (the former Chief economist at the European Central Bank) Krahnen is a member of Group of Economic Advisors (GEA), European Securities and Markets Authority in Paris, and a member of Academic Advisory Board of German Federal Ministry of Finance.
