He received his VWO degree from school in 2007. He decided to concentrate on speedkating after a long and successful career in inline and skating, in which he won several European and Dutch titles in the junior categories. He won the Dutch Allround Speed Skating Championships junior title in Groningen in February 2008. He was also named the junior world champion in speedskating. He finished ahead of Berden de Vries and Koen Verweij. He won the world title in team pursuit with them.
Along with his teammates Sven Kramer, and Koen Verweij, he holds the current world record for the team pursuit discipline. He won silver in the Men’s 5k m competition at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. Blokhuijsen was awarded his first European title at the 2014 European allround championships held in Hamar.
