He also writes literary criticism. When writing crime fiction, he uses the pen name Arne D Dahl. He is also a regular contributor to the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter.
In spring 2014, the fourth installment in the series was released.
Barbarer (2001), Maria och Artur (2006) were published under his own name. However, he wrote a series crime novels under his pen name about a fictional Swedish crime investigation team, “A Gruppen” as it is known in Swedish, and “the Intercrime Group in English.” These books have been translated into many languages. The first five books were made into films of 180 minutes, with two episodes each of 90 minutes. Misterioso was the first to be screened on SVT1 Sweden, 27 December and 28 December 2011. The following four stories were shown in eight weekly installments between October 2012 and December 2012. BBC Four picked up the series and it was screened on British television every Saturday night as part of BBC Four’s series on foreign crimes. It began in April 2013.

Filmlance International produced a 2011 TV adaptation of five stories by Arne Dahl in co-production with other European companies. The series was also broadcast on BBC Four in the UK between April and June 2013, alongside many other countries. The series is currently broadcast in the United States by MHz Networks. It was last broadcast from November 2013 to January 2014.
Filmlance has dramatized all ten Intercrime novels. The first five were done in 2011, and the rest in 2015. Filmlance also produces the series Bron, known in the UK under the name “The Bridge”, and later Martin Beck detective programs. Each story was dramatized in a miniseries of two episodes, each lasting ninety minutes (series 1) and two episodes of one hour (series 2) respectively.
The last five novels in the Intercrime series were adapted for Series 2 of the popular Arne Dahl TV series, produced by Filmlance. They premiered in February 2015 in Sweden. The BBC began airing the second season on BBC Four in October 2015.
