Drent was born in Pretoria and was raised until the age of eight in Potchefstroom, South Africa. In the beginning of January, 1996 Drent along with his entire family relocated into New Zealand. He recalls seeing Shortland Street for the first time and was awestruck with the dialects. While in high school Drent was a fervent tennis player at Hamilton and played with the prominent athletes Todd Breeze and Tristan Stayt. After graduation, Drent went to university for business studies and was employed in the field of property development. After working as a part-time actor on commercials for TV, Drent “caught the acting bug.”
