Ibrahim Coulibaly is one of the most popular and richest Soldier who was born on February 24, 1964 in Bouaké, Ivory Coast. Ibrahim Coulibaly was born in 1964 in Bouake, Cote d’Ivoire. He joined in the Armed Forces of Cote d’Ivoire in 1985 and was promoted up to Staff Sergeant. In the early 1990s , Coulibaly was a target for attention in the military, both as an officer and a basketball player. He was elevated to the bodyguard section of the Minister of State Alassane O’Tora. In this position, he was involved in politics , and was able to see higher-ranking officers, who later would be engaged in 1999’s Ivorian coup d’etat.
On the 30th of December 2007, The New Forces (former rebels) claimed Coulibaly of trying to stage to stage a coup in the night between December 27 and 28. They claimed that he had been moving towards the Cote D’Ivoire-Ghana frontier for the purpose of “join his accomplices” on the night of December 30. He was previously at Cotonou, Benin, but was directed to go to Benin by the country’s government because he was accused of working to undermine Cote d’Ivoire. An incident that occurred on the night in Bouake caused being killed Seydou Traore, whom the New Forces said was working for Coulibaly , who was an “central coordinator of the conspiracy”. The people involved in the fight who were arrested were believed to have identified Coulibaly as being the head in the conspiracy.
The French court found Coulibaly guilty of “heading or organising a group with mercenary objectives”, and sentenced him in absentia to four years in prison on June 4, 2008. Five of his co-defendants were acquitted and the remaining seven were given sentences lighter than Coulibaly’s.
France and Côte d’Ivoire have both issued international arrest warrants for Coulibaly. On March 10, 2008, a trial of Coulibaly, involving his alleged plot to seize power and kill Gbagbo with mercenaries in 2003, began in Paris. Coulibaly was tried in absentia; his lawyers said that they did not know where he was. 12 co-defendants were on trial with him, and most of them were present, having been arrested in France in mid-2003. On March 11, Coulibaly denied the charges in an interview with Agence France-Presse, saying that he had never attempted to recruit any mercenaries in France. According to Coulibaly, he was in Belgium at the time of the interview and would not go to France to participate in the trial. He claimed that the legal proceedings against him were intended to keep him from returning to Côte d’Ivoire to run against Gbagbo in the 2008 presidential election.
The tense October 2000 elections during which Ouattara got disqualified stopped Guei’s efforts to remain in power, and also made Laurent Gbagbo President of Cote Ivoire. Unrest over ethnicity and citizenship, similar to those that caused that 1999 coup led to another failed coup attempt January 2001. Coulibaly was once again involved in the plot and later fled back to Burkina Faso, where he along with other opposition members from Gbagbo’s government were sheltered by Gbagbo government were provided with protection by the regional rival Blaise Compaore. In September 2002, Coulibaly was back in the northern part of Cote d’Ivoire, helping lead an unsuccessful coup against Gbagbo’s administration. His group, one of the many who were part of the rebel group was in control of territory the vicinity of Bouake prior to the time that both parties sank into a standoff that led to an unofficial First Ivorian Civil War. Diverse factions were uneasyly joined within Northern-based Forces Nouvelles de Cote d’Ivoire which was led by Bouake. In August 2003, he was detained in Paris in connection with a plot to discredit Ivorian government. Ivorian government, but was granted bail on September. In June 2004, fighting took place between his followers and those of the rival rebel commando Guillaume Soro. In January 2005, Coulibaly voiced that he supported efforts of the African Union at mediating the political conflict.

Ibrahim Coulibaly (24 February 1964 – 27 April 2011) was a soldier and rebel leader from Cote d’Ivoire. A Staff Sergeant with the Armed Forces of Cote d’Ivoire, Coulibaly had served since around the beginning of the 1990s. When Cote d’Ivoire slid into communal conflict, Coulibaly volunteered to join the 1999 coup, led by Robert Guei. Another coup, which followed the elections of 2000, which resulted in Laurent Gbagbo President, saw Coulibaly in a position of leadership following which he came into conflict with his fellow commander Guillaume Soro. Over the next eight years of division within the country, he came into conflicts with both sides, and ended up returning to the Abidjan- based militia that was supportive by Alassane O’attara. After the cease-fire, Coulibaly was killed in Abidjan by the Ouattara forces in attempts to disarm his organization. Popularly referred to as “IB”, he was 47 years old at the date of his death.
Ibrahim Coulibaly became known as one of the main leaders of the December 1999 coup which was able to remove the president Henri Konan Bedie and brought the military ruler Robert Guei to power. In fact, it was Guei who appointed Coulibaly to a post in the political arena as a an official attaché to the military of the position of Ivorian Ambassador in Canada. It was later revealed that Guei wanted to remain as president after the planned elections In September 2000, an assassination attempt was thought to be orchestrated by military members. Coulibaly who was involved in the plot was able to flee the country.
Coulibaly’s associates were allegedly responsible for the assassination attempt on Ivorian Prime Minister Guillaume Soro in June 2007.
