Ian Cameron Swales (born 5 April 1953) is a British Liberal Democrat politician. He was the Parliamentary Member for the district that is Redcar located in England. Swales was able to take Redcar away from Labour incumbent Vera Baird for the Liberal Democrats during the 2010 general election, which saw an overall 21.8 percent swing. Swales added more than 10,000 votes over his general election victory. This was the largest victory for a Labour candidate during the election, and the largest gain for anyone Liberal Democrat. The candidate resigned at the general election in 2015.

As of 2010, Swales recorded the largest swing in opposition to Labour in the whole nation in winning his Redcar seat. Swales delivered his first speech in the House of Commons on June 7, 2010.

During his time in Parliament, Swales was an active member of many All Party Parliamentary Groups including Chair of the APPG for the Chemical Industry and Vice-Chair of the APPG for Steel and Energy Intensive Industries. In May 2014 Swales was appointed to the taskforce group for electrification of rail in the north by the Secretary of State for Transport, Patrick McLoughlin, MP.

Following his retirement from Parliament Swales continued to participate in local industry issues. In August 2015 he joined the Board and became Chair of the Northeast of England Process Industry Cluster (NEPIC), the body that represents companies in the chemical, pharmaceutical, polymer, renewable energy and materials, steel and biotechnology process industries in North-East England.

Following the election of 2010, Swales became an active member of the Public Accounts Committee, which is a weekly meeting that reviews all expenditures made by the government. In June 2014, Swales was removed from the Committee due to commitments to the front bench.

Ian Swales is the son of Harry Swales and Elizabeth Adamson Doig. Through his mother, he is one of the 1st cousins (1R) to Peter Doig, Labour MP for Dundee West 1963/1979. Born in Leeds and was raised in Harrogate where he studied in Ashville College, Harrogate Following an engineering degree in chemical at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology in Manchester, where he met his wife Pat who was who was a Durham miner’s daughter. After that, he was a member of Yorkshire Electricity and qualified as an accountant in 1977. He relocated into Teesside when he joined ICI and moved to Redcar.

Swales became a part of the SDP at the time of its founding in 1981. He was one of the founding members of the Cleveland County Committee for the SDP. He was a candidate in the general election in 2005 for the Redcar Constituency and moved the Liberal Democrats from third to second with a favorable shift against both Labour as well as the Conservative parties.

In July 2014, Swales announced that he was standing down as an MP at the 2015 general election, for “personal reasons”.
