O’Boyle was born in Dublin and grew up at Newbridge, County Kildare, in which he attended Patrician Secondary School. The year 2001 was the first time O’Boyle made his debut in the Irish SuperLeague for Notre Dame. After the 2002-03 season and the award ceremony, he was named as the men’s Junior Player of the Year. He relocated into America. United States and enrolled at New York’s Trinity-Pawling School. He was on the Trinity-Pawling School basketball team in 2003-2004, earning all-TriState first team and the first-team of all New England. After finishing his education at Trinity-Pawling, O’Boyle accepted a offer to attend New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). In NJIT’s home opener for the 2004-05 campaign, O’Boyle was the top player on the team in scoring 16 points to get a win over Philadelphia University, who were guided by Basketball Hall of Fame coach Herb Magee, who labelled O’Boyle as a great shooter after the win.
As of 2005, O’Boyle returned to Ireland to finish his studies at university. In addition to attending University College Dublin (UCD), O’Boyle joined UCD Marian of the Irish SuperLeague during in 2005 and 2006. He was back at Notre Dame, now Shamrock Rovers Hoops during the 2006 season and played for two seasons in the club before moving to Jordanstown in the year 2008, and there O’Boyle joined Ulster Elks for the 2008-09 season. In a match for Ireland with Luxembourg that year, she sank six consecutive three-pointers during the first half and finished the game with 23 points in winning effort. After two seasons in the Elks and then moving down south in Cork and joined Neptune. The time he spent with Neptune was brief however, since he resigned mid-season.
On 26 July 2016, O’Boyle signed with Swords Thunder for the 2016–17 Irish Super League season. He appeared in two of Thunder’s first three games of the season, and one National Cup game, before departing the team in late October.
