He is the second child of Patricia Ann Kelly and Professor Donald Kelly. Kelly was raised in Philadelphia, Bristol and the Wirral. Kelly attended UCLA Film School and Cambridge University.

He was Hermione Granger’s father in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1. He was a part of The Pitmen Painters at The National Theatre, Broadway, and the West End. He acted in London’s West End as well as New York in his one-man plays. In the title role, he also performed in the US premiere Ron Hutchinson’s ‘Beau Brummell’. His performance in Tom Stoppard’s Arcadia (Manchester Drama Awards) earned him the nomination for Best Actor. He was nominated at the Montreal International Film Festival for his role in Alexei Balabanov’s Voyna(War), which was shot in Chechnya, and the Caucasus. In 2015, he played George III in the premier production of Mr Foote’s other leg.

Kelly’s play ‘Mr Foote’s Other Leg’, directed by Sir Richard Eyre and starring Simon Russell Beale, opened at Hampstead Theatre in 2015 before transferring directly into the West End, Theatre Royal Haymarket, playing 2015-2016 .

The Society for Theatre Research UK named Mr. Foote’s book, “The Other Leg”, the Best Theatre Book in May 2013. His biography on Beau Brummell was shortlisted to receive the Marsh Biography Award. His biography of Casanova won the Sunday Times Biography of the Year 2008-9.
