In May 2015, Foster joined new manager Paul Cook at Portsmouth as first team coach.

The pair were instrumental in guiding United to safety, as they won their Premier Division title by defeating UCD on day three of the season. Foster could have been at Dundalk in 2010, as Kenna applied to a variety of jobs before she decided to stay at Galway. Foster accepted the challenge in January after a surprising U-turn by the ex-Irish international. Foster once again saved the Westerners from relegation, finishing the season eighth.

In 2006, he retired from football to become a physiotherapist for the Harriers. His time at that job ended when he arrived in Galway in April 2008.
