He was a chorister at Winchester Cathedral, then went to Marlborough College and finally to the University of Bristol in 1979 where he earned a First Class Honours degree as Civil Engineer.
Firth served as President of the Institution of Structural Engineers 2017 and is currently Chairman of British Group of International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering. Firth is also a Trustee for Bridges to Prosperity, a bridge-building charity.
Firth was the leader of the team that won the Poole Harbour Crossing bridge competition in 1997. He worked with Dissing+Weitling and has since won numerous other bridge design competitions. These include Lockmeadow Bridge, Maidstone, and the Bridge of Aspiration to the Royal Ballet School, London.

After graduating, Firth joined Flint & Neill, London’s specialist consulting engineers. He initially worked on a range of projects, including tall radio masts, towers, chimneys, steel buildings, and the aerodynamic stability and box girder bridges. In 1982, he graduated from Imperial College with a second degree in structural steel design. He returned to Flint & Neill and worked on the strengthening and upgrading the Wye Bridge. This was a steel box girder cable-stayed bridge that is part of the M48 Severn. He has been involved in similar projects, such as the Erskine Bridge (Scotland) and the West Gate Bridge (Australia). He also conducted independent design inspections and investigations on the Tsing Ma Bridge (Kashui Mun Bridge) and Ting Kau Bridges, all located in Hong Kong. As special advisor to the client, he was assigned to the Strait of Messina Bridge, an Italian bridge with a span of 3,300m.
Flint & Neill made him a partner in 1990. In 2008, Flint & Neill joined COWI and he was elected a director. In 2018, he retired from full-time employment and is now a consultant. He continues to provide engineering advice and bridge design, as well as training and education.
