Cockerill started his career in Welkom South Africa as a technical assistant at De Beers. In 1979, Cockerill joined De Beers as a technical assistant at the Kleinzee diamond operations. After spending time in the United Kingdom as Minorco’s Technical Director’s Office Assistant, Cockerill returned home to South Africa to be transferred to the gold division at Anglo American Corporation, later AngloGold Ltd., where he was Manager of Elandsrand, Western Deep Levels West Mine (1992-1996). Cockerill served as Executive Director (Business Development), and Executive Officer (African International Operations), respectively, between 1996 and 1999. Cockerill was made Chief Operating Officer and Managing Director of Gold Fields Limited in 1999. In 2002, he was elected President and Chief Executive Officer at Gold Fields Ltd. Cockerill was appointed Chief Executive Officer (Anglo Coal) at Anglo American plc in June 2008. He was responsible for all global operations, until he retired in 2009. Cockerill served as the Executive Chairman (2009-2015) and Chairman (2015-2017) of Petmin Limited (South Africa’s largest producer of metallurgical antracite).

Cockerill was still CEO of Harmony Gold Mining Company in October 2004. The company launched an aggressive hostile bid to acquire Goldfields Ltd. Cockerill argued strongly against the bid. He stated that the transaction would lead to labour retrenchments as well as a significant decrease in competition in the global and South African gold mining industries. Harmony Gold’s hostile takeover bid was defeated by Cockerill in May 2005. The hostile takeover bid and Cockerill’s role in protecting Goldfields were the subjects of controversial non-fiction book “Battlefields of Gold” by Rex Gibson (Jonathan Ball Publishers 2012).

In October 2009, Cockerill was forced out of his position as CEO of Anglo Coal in a management cull carried out by Anglo CEO Cynthia Carroll. Carroll had handpicked him for the job in April 2008, when he moved from his previous position as CEO of Gold Fields. Speculation in the global financial and mining press was that Cockerill was axed because he was a threat to Carroll’s position.
