Cheng was born in Los Angeles in 1984. Cheng was a graduate of Van Nuys High School. Cheng received a double degree in cognitive science as well as art practice from the University of California, Berkeley in 2006. Cheng was employed at Industrial Light & Magic (George Lucas’s visual effects company). Cheng graduated from Columbia University in 2009 with a Master of Fine Arts. Cheng was a member of Pierre Huyghe’s studio from 2010 to 2012. Cheng created Emissaries from 2015 to 2017. This trilogy of episodic, live simulations “explore cognitive evolution’s past, present, and future.” Emissaries also introduced the narrative agent, the Emissary. His motivation to tell a story was in conflict with the simulation’s open-ended chaos. Cheng defines the archetype for the emissary, as someone who is “caught between unravelling old realities or emerging strange one,” an embodiment of the relationship between meaninglessness and meaning. Cheng was inspired by Julian Jaynes’ narrative nature of consciousness in The Breakdown of the Bicameral mind.

BOB premiered in the United States in 2019 at Gladstone Gallery. BOB features a unique model of AI that combines an inductive engine for the learning of rule-based beliefs from sensory experiences with a motivational framework composed of mini-personalities called “demons”. Each demon competes for control of BOB’s body in a “congress of demons”, and each utilizes the inductive engine to achieve its motivations while minimizing surprise. Viewers were invited to send their own stream of stimuli to BOB through BOB Shrine, an iOS app.

Cheng promoted simulation as an artistic medium. It can be used to create both algorithmically and man-made content, which together create emergent behavior over an infinite time. Cheng’s work demonstrates the power of simulation to show the unpredictability between chaos and order in complex systems. Cheng created the term “live sim” to describe a type of simulation that is shown in real-time in public, without any predefined fitness criteria or an optimal outcome. Cheng has created a series simulations that explore the ability of an AI-based agent to adapt to a constantly changing environment since 2013.
