Butterworth’s career continued in Sweden with IK Brage (11 goals, 0 apps). In September 1997, he was player-manager. He soon returned to England when he joined Stafford Rangers in the role of player. He joined Cobh Ramblers in the first part of 1998 as player-manager, but he had already left after three months. His playing career was over.

In May 1998, he joined Dave Hodgson’s Darlington as Assistant Manager. They led Darlington to a Wembley appearance in the Division Two play-offs in 1999/2000 but in a shock move, Hodgson and Butterworth resigned from their jobs on 2 July 2000, with Hodgson immediately replaced by Gary Bennett.

In October 2000 he joined Cardiff as assistant he was there to 2004 until Sam Hammam sacked him.

Ian left Norwich’s non-league Norfolk neighbors King’s Lynn to try to revive his career. He then moved to the USA to play for the Colorado Rapids in 1996’s MLS.

Butterworth was a central defensive defender who began his career at Coventry City and then moved to Nottingham Forest in a deal that brought future England international Stuart Pearce from Coventry. Butterworth joined Norwich City temporarily in September 1986, before signing permanently for the club for a fee PS160,000 the next month.

After eight years as a Norwich centre defence player, he was forced to retire in 1994-95 due to knee injuries. He was part of the Canaries’ greatest period in their history. In his first season, he helped them finish fifth in their league (a year after being promoted), reach the FA Cup semi finals in 1989, and again in 1992. He also finished a club record third in the FA Premier League in 1993, and eliminated Bayern Munich from the UEFA Cup.

In October 2000, Ian was appointed as Number 2 to Alan Cork at Cardiff City and this partnership was successful as Cardiff gained promotion to Division Two in April 2001. As assistant to Lennie Lawrance, Ian helped Cardiff into Division One in May 2003.
