He performed well at the Jan Meda Cross Country, February 2011 and surprised the more experienced Imane Merga by showing speed and speed to win his first national senior title. At the 2007 African Junior Championships of Athletics, Mesfin took the 10,000m silver medal behind Mathew Kisorio from Kenya. This was his first major medal. 2008 was his first year competing in global competition. He finished eleventh in the junior category at the 2008 IAAF World Cross Country Championships. This performance helped Ethiopia win the silver medals. He finished fourth behind Ibrahim Jeilan, an Ethiopian athlete, at the 2008 World Junior Championships of Athletics. He represented Ethiopia at the International Chiba Ekiden, winning his race stage and helping the national team win the title. He finished the year in third place at the inaugural Bahir Dar Cross Country.
Mesfin began 2009 with a win in the junior section at the Sulta Cross Country. However, he competed in the senior section of the 2009 IAAF World Cross Country Championships. His tenth place performance placed the Ethiopian men in second place on the team rankings. At the end of 2009, he began to race on the senior European cross-country circuit. He won a major victory at Cross Internacional Zornotza in Jan 2010, and was able to share a photo finish at the finish with Gebre Gebremariam (reigning world champion). His 21st birthday was marked by a second major victory at the Cinque Mulini. He failed to match his 2010 IAAF World Cross Country Championships placing, in which he finished the race in 19th place, while Ethiopia won the bronze medal behind Eritrea and Kenya.
At the Cross Zornotza in 2012 he took third place.
