Savinovich was a long-time wrestler, having performed in numerous Caribbean countries such as Panama, Puerto Rico, and Dominican Republic. Savinovich claims that his life was saved by becoming a professional wrestler. He was a member of a gang in New York City in the late 1960s and early 70s. Angel “El Toro”, Maldonado guided him to the sport. Arturo Mendoza, a Mexican wrestle promoter, took him to Puerto Rico where he lived for nearly 14 years.
Savinovich started his career as a wrestler by working for Arturo Mendoza, a promoter who ran wrestling shows in Puerto Rico’s west. Arturo Mendoza saw that Savinovich was a good announcer. In 1978, he was promoted to the World Wrestling Council. He was originally a “tecnico”, which is Spanish for “face”, or “good guys” in wrestling. After breaking up with Mendoza, and Little Chief Cherokee, Mendoza joined Capitol Sport Promotions, the local World Wrestling Council franchise located in Puerto Rico. There, he became well-known for his role as a “rudo” wrestler (i.e., wrestling villains). His penchant for flamboyancy, self-promotion, and self-promotion earned him his most popular ring name, El Munecazo (“The Big Baby Doll”) Savinovich has stated that he modelled his role on Gorgeous George. However, his look was unique to him and only him (long hair, mullet, and gaped teeth reminiscent of David Letterman). His voice was high pitched and his delivery was fast, reminiscent of the American drag racing radio ads. He was also able to improve his skills as a color commentator, using a loud, fast narrative style. This style is known as “estilo libre” (“wrestling style”) in Puerto Rico.
Hugo managed some the most notorious heels in professional wrestling such as Abdullah the Butcher, Ox Baker, The Sheik and Buddy Landell until he had a fallout with Barrabas Sr becoming a face in 1984.
