They also reflect his concern about globalization and the effects it has on the Earth’s well being.

Bastidas received a Robert Smithson Memorial Scholarship for Sculpture from the Brooklyn Museum Art School in 1979-1980. In 1990, Bastidas was granted an honorary full professorship by Central University in Quito (Ecuador). Bastidas received a Fulbright Fellowship in the same year. He was awarded a Pollock- Krasner Foundation grant in 1992. Bastidas was elected a National Academician in New York, NY, in 2009. He was elected a member in 2000 of the Century Association, New York, NY.

His medium- and large- scale paintings featured contrasting zones of high and low detail. By making thousands of marks with a size No. 1 hog’s bristle brush on linen primed with rabbit-skin glue, Bastidas achieved a high level of image definition.
