Padgham was also involved in the production of XTC and Ghost in the Machine, and also produced some of Sting’s solo albums. He was also involved in Paul McCartney’s Press to Play, and The Human League’s Hysteria.
In the 2000s, Padgham worked with Sting as well as McFly. He had four UK number one hits in 2005 and 2006 with McFly, as well as a number of other Top Ten Singles. In 2002, Padgham produced the Tragically Hip album In Violet Light.
In a 2006 interview, Padgham revealed how the effect was first engineered:
Padgham is known for creating the “gated-reverb” drum sound that was featured on Phil Collins’ single, “In the Air Tonight”. This sound became the basis of much of the recorded pop drum sound in the 1980s. This effect was first used by Padgham on the 1980 self-titled third solo album of Peter Gabriel. Collins also recorded it. Padgham was at this time working as the recording engineer for Steve Lillywhite in the UK. They collaborated on numerous well-known singles and albums in the 1980s.

Hugh Charles Padgham, born 15 February 1955, is an English recording producer and audio engineer. He won four Grammy Awards for producer of the year and album of the year for 1985, Record and Record of the YEAR for 1990, and Engineer and the Year 1993. Mix magazine’s 1992 poll rated him as one of the “Top Ten Most Influential Produces” in the world. Padgham co-produced hits by Phil Collins and Genesis as well as the Human League, Genesis, Sting, Sting, Sting, Sting, etc. With Peter Gabriel and Steve Lillywhite, he pioneered the “gated-reverb” drum sound that is featured in Collins’ “In the Air Tonight”.
After listening to Elton John’s Tumbleweed Connection, Padgham was inspired to pursue record production. Advision Studios was his first job, where he worked on numerous recording sessions such as Gentle Giant and Mott The Hoople. From there he went to Lansdowne Studios and moved from tape-operator/assistant engineer to engineer. Padgham was offered a job at The Townhouse in 1978. He engineered and/or produced acts such as XTC and Peter Gabriel.
Padgham lives in Chiswick, West London, with his partner, the designer Cath Kidston and his daughter Jessica (born 1992/93). They met when she worked as his interior designer.
