Hubertus von Amelunxen is one of the most popular and richest Art Historian who was born on December 29, 1958 in Bad Hindelang, Bavaria, Germany. Hubertus von Amelunxen, born 29 December 1958 in Bad Hindelang (Allgau), is a philosopher and art historian. He also serves as an editor, curator and critic of photography. Amelunxen is the author and editor of several books on history and theory in photography. He has also curated many international exhibitions. From October 2013 to June 2018, he was president and provost of the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee (Switzerland) and Valletta (Malta).

Amelunxen began his academic career in 1991 by lecturing at Basel on Time and Photography (1991). Victor Burgin was his representative, and he became a visiting professor at the University of California Santa Cruz (1991-1992). He was awarded a five-year tenure in 1995 at the Muthesius Hochschule for Art and Design, Kiel. There he also founded the Center for Interdisciplinary Project Studies. In 2000, he was appointed to the University of Dusseldorf as well as the Institute for Fine Arts in Antwerp. He was appointed the International School of New Media’s founding director in Lubeck in 2001. This position he held until 2005. He was rector at the Ecole Europeenne Superieure de l’Image in Angouleme/Poitiers from 2005 to 2009. He was president of Hochschule der Bildenden Kunste, Braunschweig, from 2010 to 2013.

Besides his academic endeavours, Amelunxen has been active as curator and member of artistic organisations. From 2001 until 2007 Amelunxen was Senior Curator at the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) in Montréal. During this time, he was responsible for the acquisition of an important group of works by Gordon Matta-Clark for the CCA. These works were reviewed by the Gordon Matta- Clark Archive and deposited within the CCA for 25 years.

Since 2002 Amelunxen has been a faculty member of the European Graduate School, a private graduate school based in Saas-Fee, Switzerland, and Valletta, Malta, which specializes in philosophy, critical thinking and art therapy.

Hubertus von Amelunxen was married to Christine Marx in 1990. They divorced in 2012. They have two sons. Amelunxen lives in Berlin, Switzerland, and Malta.
