Feng was born Taiwan. Feng’s father was originally from Fujian, and her mother from Manchuria. When she was six years old, her father died and her mother remarried. Feng became the oldest of her three half-sibling siblings. Feng started filmmaking to support her family’s poor. Feng responded to a casting call at the age of 15, which led her to a small role in King Hu’s 1967 film Dragon Gate Inn.
Two years later, after her role in Dragon Gate Inn as a 19-year-old, she was given a prominent part in King Hu’s classic martial arts epos A Touch of Zen (1971). She was the daughter of Yang, the general’s daughter. Her father was assassinated by the imperial eunuch Wei and she had to flee the capital. Richard Corliss (Time), a film critic, later described her performance as “the screen’s gravest and most ravishing women warrior.” Hsu’s view of films changed after A Touch of Zen. She initially viewed films as a means of earning a living and a commercial product. But after she traveled with King Hu to Cannes Festival to promote A Touch of Zen, Hsu began to see them as art. Hsu was still in post-production on A Touch of Zen (1971), but she starred in Ten Days in Dragon City (1969), for which she won the Golden Horse Award as Best New Performer. She also continued working with King Hu in several films. She was again playing the role of martial artists in The Fate of Lee Khan (1973), The Valiant Ones (75) and Raining in the Mountain (79). For her part in the ghost story Legend of the Mountain, 1979, she was nominated for the Golden Horse Award as Best Actress.
After resigning from her career as an actress in 1981 and a hiatus from the film industry in general, Hsu embarked on a career as producer. She set up her own production company Tomson Films in 1983 and specialized primarily on the production of artistic films. Among others she produced Red Dust (1990), Five Girls and a Rope (1992), Farewell, My Concubine (1993), Red Firecracker, Green Firecracker (1994) and Temptress Moon (1996). For Red Dust she received the Golden Horse Award for the best film. Farewell, My Concubine and Temptress Moon were both directed by Chen Kaige and became international successes. In particular the former received several international awards among them the Palme d’Or (1993), the Golden Globe (1993) and BAFTA (1994) Awards for best foreign film.
