Henry C. “Howie” Morales, born January 5, 1973, is an American politician and member the Democratic Party. He currently serves as the thirty-fifth lieutenant governor in New Mexico since January 1, 2019. From 2008 to 2019, he was a member the New Mexico Senate representing the 28th district, which includes Catron and Grant counties.

New Mexico State Senator Ben D. Altamirano suffered a heart attack on December 27, 2007. Governor Bill Richardson appointed Morales on January 9, 2008 to the vacant post that Altamirano had held since 1971. Jay Santillanes (Socorro County Commission Chairman) stated that Morales was recommended by the Altamirano family in order to fill Ben Altamirano’s term. Nina Altamirano, Altamirano’s spouse, had thought about applying for the job, but she decided against it.

Morales ran for the office that he was appointed to in the 2008 general elections and defeated Republican Joseph Gros, 9,561 to 4,019, to retain his seat.

In October 2013, Morales officially announced he would run for the office of Governor of New Mexico.

In 2005, Morales was elected County Secretary in Grant County. He was the County Clerk and oversaw the switch from more than 1,000 old voting machines to newer Edge Touch Screen Machines. He also established a Bureau of Elections Department in the Clerk’s Office.

Morales graduated from Silver High School in Silver City, New Mexico in 1991. His father was a Vietnam vet and his mother had multiple hourly-wage jobs. Morales started his first job as an teen to support his parents. He later worked as a maintenance worker and shoe salesman. He received a Bachelor of Science degree and, in 1998, a Master of Art in Bilingual Special Education degree from Western New Mexico University. Morales received a PhD in Education Curriculum & Instruction from New Mexico State University with a dual focus in computer learning technologies, management and leadership.

Morales started his professional career as a teacher in special education classes in the Silver Consolidated Schools District in 1995. He was also the Cobre High School’s head baseball coach from 2001 to 2005.

Sen. Morales’ team won a state title in 2008, and he coached his team as state runners-up in 2002, 2007 and 2009. He was also part of seven district championships and seven regional championships as a head coach. Morales also enjoys the rare honor of having a baseball stadium named in his honor, in Bayard, New Mexico.
