He often interacted with Chester Proudfoot, who was also played by Baer.

McNear was first cast in 1961 as Floyd Lawson, a vague and chatty barber on The Andy Griffith Show. He suffered a stroke during the show’s run that left his left side paralyzed. To recover, he left the series for almost a year and half. Andy Griffith asked McNear to come back to the series. McNear accepted, despite his inability to stand or walk. The production crew also accommodated Floyd, who was often seen standing or seated on the screen. He was often seen sitting down at the barbershop bench, rather than actively trimming his hair. McNear would hold a newspaper in his left hand or rest his hand on his lap during his post-stroke scenes. He then moved his right arm and hand while speaking his lines. McNear’s character can be heard entering the courthouse in a 1964 episode entitled “Otis Sues the County” as well as a 1967 episode called “Goober’s Contest”. Next, Floyd is seen sitting in a chair. Jack Dodson, the actor who played Howard Sprague in The Andy Griffith Show, says McNear started having trouble remembering his lines, and then became anxious and frustrated. In 1967, he left the series.
